Virtual Assistant Vacation

I’m not a good vacation-taker.
I was on vacation this past week. I stayed at my brother’s summer trailer at Crystal Lake. No Internet access and poor cell phone reception. The perfect vacation for a Virtual Assistant who spends her life online, right? You would think so…

Here was my week:
- Monday: This was Decompression Day since my eye was still twitching from having too much work last week — because I was going on vacation. And I kept worrying about how much work I’d have next week — because I went on vacation. I ate half a Pecan Chocolate Chip Danish Coffeecake and slept 12 hours.
- Tuesday: This was Ebook Writing Day — the main reason that I was away from the real world. I’ve had an ebook about Virtual Assistance writing itself in my head for the past year. It was clamoring to get out, so I thought this would be the best way to spend some time writing (keying) it onto paper (the screen). It actually worked! I wrote for 5 hours straight. My brain felt almost empty by the time I was done. (No comments, please
) Of course, there’s still a ton of editing to do, but it was a real feeling of accomplishment to get this far! Slept for 10 hours that night. - Wednesday: Almost a Vacation Day: I cleaned out my Outlook files, had lunch (including gelato) with my sister (at a restaurant with WiFi so I was able to get a quick Internet fix and check my email), and then watched Dr. Phil, Oprah, NCIS, and flipped back and forth between the Presidential Debate and a rerun of Boston Legal.
- Thursday: A Mishmash Day — I wrote blog entries so I’d have some ready to post, worried about the economy – wondered what expenses I could cut out (do I really NEED a massage every two weeks? He**, yes!), made lists of things I needed to do when I was back home, and spent 5 hours reading journal articles about CRISPRs. No, that’s not a new type of cracker. It’s what I’m working on in the bioinformatics part of my business. Apparently, bacteria have an immune system and CRISPRs play a part in that. Fascinating! My vacation treat for the day was the other half of the coffeecake plus a bottle of chocolate milk.
- Friday: Back to Reality — I packed up after breakfast and headed home. After unpacking, washing clothes, getting my laptop running and reading through my emails, I’m rarin’ to get back to work!
I probably won’t be on vacation again until next spring when we go to Brewers Spring Training, visit my brother, and then my son and his wife. Fortunately, there will be WiFi all along the way, and I’ll be able to take my laptop (and my work) with me
